Staff Training:
Seminars and Workshops
The skills and techniques required to work with
individuals who are visually impaired and developmentally disabled are significantly
distinct from those needed to work with the sighted-disabled population. The staff of most
sheltered workshops or other facilities for developmentally delayed and blind individuals
does not have the skills required to work with DD/blind. To ensure that consumers derive
the greatest benefit and comfort in the workplace, it is imperative that staff has an
adequate understanding of the implications of vision loss and its impact on the
individual.
In essence, employees must be able to communicate
in an effective manner, choosing words that are meaningful and descriptive to those
without vision. They should be able to move consumers around safely, efficiently
and appropriately. To maintain their blind consumers safety, they must be
able to direct them towards their desired destinations, and away from unsafe conditions,
from a distance
without tactile prompting.
We provide workshops and staff training seminars in
various aspects of working with the visually impaired and developmentally disabled
population. Instruction is provided initially in group format and followed up with
individual instruction. In that way, information presented is understood and all questions
are addressed.
Topics include, but are not limited to, the
following:
- Implications of vision loss.
- Effective communication with visually impaired
consumers.
- Safety issues.
- Use of proper indoor travel skills, including the
sighted-guide technique.
- Effective presentation of activities.
- Addressing behavior problems commonly associated
with visually impaired individuals.
- Appropriate reinforcement of desired behaviors.
- Developing appropriate expectations.
- Instructional handouts are provided.
Training and activities are conducted on-site by
qualified and experienced professionals. Documentation of training is provided for all
employees and is compliance with the various accrediting agencies.
